The 2007 Powerlifting Championship weightlifting competition is scheduled to begin at 10 a.m. Saturday, September 8th, at the Venice Beach Recreation Center, 1800 Ocean Front Walk, Venice.

The bench press and deadlift comprise the events for the contest, which offers men, women and juniors (ages 13 and older) a chance to compete in 22 weight classifications and six age divisions (plus open men and women) under United States Powerlifting Federation rules.

The bench press requires participants to lie on their back on a horizontal bench and press a weight supported by a barbell straight up from their chest, locking their elbows at the top, and then bring it back down to their chest.

For the deadlift, competitors start in a standing position, then bend forward and lift a barbell with weights attached, return to an upright position, then lower it back to the ground.

Registration is $60 per lifter through Saturday, September 1st, and $80 after that date (cash only on the day of the event).

Qualified competitors can enter additional divisions for $30 each and groups can pay an extra $50 to enter as a team.

Awards will be presented to the top three finishers in all the classes except team, in which the two best groups of lifters will be recognized for their accomplishments. Honors will also go to the best overall individual lifter in each weight class or age group.

Spectators are welcome and admission is free.
