The Westchester High School boys basketball team kicked off the season in victorious fashion by capturing the Tip-Off Classic Championship on its home court after a 63-59 win over Leuzinger High School Saturday, December 6th.
The Comets (4-0) reached the title game of their home tournament after grabbing three consecutive victories over Gardena (82-37), Windward (72-52) and Dominguez (85-56) high schools.
Westchester jumped to a 39-31 lead at halftime in the tournament championship. Leuzinger then cut the deficit to 51-48 in the third quarter, but the Comets were able to hold on for the narrow victory.
Dominique O’Connor led Westchester with 13 points and Jordin Mayes added 12 points, including two three-pointers.
The Comets will play their first Western League game against host L.A. CES at 7 p.m. Monday, December 15th.
In other high school boys basketball games:
The St. Bernard High School Vikings were defeated 74-61 by Price High School in the championship game of the Mira Costa Pacific Shores Tournament Saturday, December 6th.
It was the first loss of the season for the Vikings (3-1), who reached the tournament final after victories over Banning (74-60), Brentwood (72-58) and host Mira Costa (64-60) high schools.
In the tournament final, the two teams were tied at the end of the first quarter but Price took a 33-28 lead into halftime that it would not relinquish.
Marcus Darrington scored a game-high 28 points, including three, three-pointers for St. Bernard. Fred White finished with 14 points and Emmanuel Alloh added 12 points.
The Vikings will next play at St. Margaret’s in a non-league game at 7 p.m. Friday, December 12th.
Playing against one of the top teams in the Southland — Fairfax High School — the Santa Monica High School Vikings were handed their first loss of the season (70-57) in a non-league game at home Saturday, December 6th.
The Vikings (2-1), who opened the season with a 53-36 victory over Crossroads of Santa Monica, will next play at Hart High School in a non-league game at 7 p.m. Wednesday, December 17th.
The St. Monica High School Mariners were defeated 81-76 by L.A. CES in a tournament on their home court, the St. Monica Tip-Off Invitational, Thursday, December 4th.
After St. Monica (2-2) fell behind 40-29 at halftime, the Mariners scored 27 points in the fourth quarter, but it was not enough to overcome the deficit.
Ryan Capiro led the Mariners with 21 points in the game and Richard Gibson added 15 points, six assists and eight rebounds.
The Mariners will next play in the St. Anthony Tournament at 3 p.m. Thursday, December 11th.
In high school girls basketball games:
The Westchester High School Comets lost 38-27 to host Redondo Union in the first round of the Redondo Tournament Monday, December 8th.
The Comets (2-3) will play at L.A. CES in a Western League game at 4 p.m. Friday, December 12th.
The Santa Monica High School Vikings picked up a third consecutive victory after a 65-36 win over West Torrance High in the Redondo Classic Tournament Monday, December 8th.
The Vikings (4-1) took a 38-24 lead into halftime and held West to just six points in both the third and fourth quarters on the way to victory.
Thea Lemberger scored 19 points to lead Santa Monica and Jennie Harding finished with 15 points in the game.
The St. Monica High School Mariners cruised to a 79-52 victory over Artesia High School in the St. Anthony Tournament Saturday, December 6th.
The Mariners (2-2) jumped to a convincing 41-24 lead at halftime and held Artesia to nine points in the third quarter on the way to victory.
Cory Laguardia led St. Monica with 25 points in the game and Kristian Johnson added 20 points.
