The fifth annual Jazz on the Lawn concert series in Santa Monica continues Sunday, Aug. 8 with a performance by Bobby Matos and his Afro-Latin Jazz Ensemble.
The concert, presented by the city of Santa Monica Cultural Affairs Division, is scheduled from 5 to 7 p.m. in front of Santa Monica City Hall, 1685 Main St. Admission and parking are free.
The ensemble mixes melodies of modern jazz with the rhythms of Cuban Charanga. Matos’ first performances were in the early 1960s at small cafes in the Bronx, New York.
As his music caught on, he was soon performing in dance halls, elegant supper clubs and theaters, and later in venues such as Carnegie Hall and Central Park.
In addition to the concert, the Big Swirl Truck, a self-serve gourmet gelato food truck, will offer sorbet and dairy free options and IZZE Sparkling Juice and Sparkletts are providing complimentary beverages.
Visitors are encouraged to bring a picnic, lawn chairs and blankets.
Free parking is located nearby at the Civic Center Auditorium at 1855 Main St.
Event sponsors include KJazz, IZZE Sparkling Juice, Sparkletts, the Big Swirl Truck, Whole Foods, and Le Pain Quotidien.
