The Bonedaddys will play concerts benefiting the Church in Ocean Park in Santa Monica at 6 and 8:30 p.m. Sunday, April 28 at Rusty’s Surf Ranch on the Santa Monica Pier.
Organizers say the shows will help raise funds to protect and preserve the 90-year-old church at Hill and Second streets.
Tickets for the 6 p.m. show, which includes dinner, are $50 and up. Tickets are $15 for the 8:30 p.m. show. Doors open at 5:30 p.m.
Both shows will open with magician David Groves.
Supporters say the church has been a hotbed of activism relating to social justice and fairness. Some of the church’s groups include the Committee on Racial Justice, which meets regularly to work on changing systemic patterns of racism.
Additionally, the church has played a part in the creation of several now prominent organizations including the Liberty Hill Foundation, an activist social change philanthropic organization that had its first office at the church in the 1970s, supporters say. The Westside Family Health Center also had its origins in the church.
The Ocean Park Community Center (OPCC), a social service organization in Santa Monica, was housed at the church for 15 years.
Event organizers say the church needs to raise $95,000 to pay for needed electrical and sound system upgrades as well as support for current church initiatives.
“The Church in Ocean Park has played a creative and innovative role in the evolution of Santa Monica,” said Jim Conn. “It continues that work today, and its work is essential to the future of this city.”
Pastor Janet McKeithen added, “We provide a place where the powerful and the powerless come to the same place with equal voice and work to initiate positive change within themselves and in the world.”
