The Boys & Girls Club of Santa Monica, Santa Monica Police Activities League, Virginia Avenue Project and Crossroads School are uniting for the Hella Epic group’s Back to School Skateboard Give Away Sunday, September 20th.

The event — scheduled from noon to 3 p.m. at the Boys & Girls Club skate park, 1238 Lincoln Blvd., Santa Monica — marks the first collaboration between the Santa Monica community youth services organizations.

Hella Epic, founded by three high school students, is devoted to helping underprivileged kids experience skateboarding as a means for transportation and recreation. The group believes that skateboarding encourages a healthy lifestyle, and that it can help prevent the involvement in harmful activities conducive to behavior such as gang affiliation and substance abuse.

The event will include demonstrations from professional skaters, safety workshops, lunch and a special gift of transportation and recreation — a skateboard. The youths will also be treated to entertainment by local musicians, including Butter, with Crossroads School students Zach Tabori and Zack Sekoff and drummer Andrew Haley; Dalai Sonido, an alternative rock band; and DJ Angelique, who plays house, techno, and progressive music.
