Winners of the Calico Bass Tournament, an inter-yacht club fishing tournament hosted by the Del Rey Yacht Club Anglers Friday and Saturday, August 11th and 12th, have been announced.

The yacht clubs and anglers who participated were from Pacific Mariners Yacht Club, California Yacht Club, Del Rey Yacht Club, South Coast Corinthian Yacht Club and Marina del Rey Anglers.

All of the clubs are based in Marina del Rey. Thirteen boats and 54 anglers participated in the annual Catalina Island tournament.

The tournament was a catch-and-release event, meaning the fish had to be weighed alive and successfully swim away for the anglers to contend for prizes.

The top three finishers won cash awards, with a perpetual trophy awarded to the angler who caught the heaviest calico bass.

Winning the perpetual trophy was John Romanak of Del Rey Yacht Club, who caught a 5.13-pound calico bass aboard Bait’N & Switch.

Vic Jedlicka, of Del Rey Yacht Club, caught a 4.4-pound calico bass aboard Bulls Eye to place second.

Placing third with a 4.3-pound calico bass was Alan Wichser, of Pacific Mariners Yacht Club aboard Prowler.

In the yellowtail category, Gary Smith, of Pacific Mariners Yacht Club, won first place with an 8.5-pound fish aboard Prowler.

Harrison Wax won second place for his 6.4-pound yellowtail aboard Good Vibration and also the tournament’s Youth Award.

Chip Rau, who was a guest aboard Bait’N & Switch, won third place for his 6.3-pound yellowtail.

In other tournament categories, no white sea bass were caught.

Pacific Mariners Yacht Club was the side bet winner.

Five trophies were awarded to children.

All boat captains and the three calico bass winners received hats with calico bass embroidery.
