Longtime Argonaut employee Carol Hector has been named to succeed David Asper Johnson as editor and publisher and owner of The Argonaut.
Johnson, who died Wednesday, May 17th, announced Saturday, May 13th, during an informal meeting of the board of directors of The Argonaut, Inc., that he had determined who would succeed him as editor, publisher and owner of The
Johnson said that Argonaut production director Carol Hector was chosen to be editor, publisher and owner of The Argonaut upon his death, and that she was to assume the title of associate editor and publisher, under his direction, Monday, May 15th.
“I am able to make this decision,” Johnson said, “in part because of the strong abilities and commitment of Carol and the other executives and staffers who are running The Argonaut.”
Johnson said he was “making the announcement at this time to assure that the public knows that The Argonaut will continue to be owned by a single local person and will continue as an independent local community newspaper.”
“Carol Hector has been a strong member of The Argonaut for nearly 27 years and participates in various California Newspaper Publishers Association (CNPA) activities,” he said.
Business manager Carole Keenan and advertising director Rikki Barker, will continue in their function as executive officers.
Johnson spoke highly of the three executives, noting that “under their guidance the newspaper has continued to advance in circulation to 42,000.”
He also noted that Anita Varghese is continuing as news editor, and Rahne Pistor as What’s On editor.
The Argonaut, a weekly community newspaper, covers Marina del Rey, Westchester, Santa Monica, Playa del Rey, Playa Vista, Del Rey, Venice and Mar Vista.
The newspaper is owned by The Argonaut, Inc., in which Johnson was the sole stockholder. After Johnson’s death Wednesday, the corporation’s board of directors named Hector editor and publisher.
On the board of directors are longtime Argonaut employee and former associate publisher George Drury Smith, who is treasurer of The Argonaut, Inc., and Greg Davis, the corporation’s CPA.
