The Seventh Annual Jennifer Diamond Celebrity Sailboat Regatta benefiting the Jennifer Diamond Cancer Foundation will take place at the Del Rey Yacht Club in Marina del Rey Saturday, August 22nd.
Special guests at this year’s regatta include 17-year-old Zac Sunderland, who recently became the youngest sailor to circumnavigate the globe alone on his 36-foot boat Intrepid, and his 15-year-old sister Andrea, who plans to attempt the same feat in 2010.
Zac Sunderland says he looks forward to the August 22nd event which will be the second regatta in which he has participated.
There will be pre- and post-race activities at the yacht club, including the Skippers and Sailors party following the race. The public is invited to attend and can also contribute $16 to the foundation, which includes a barbecue following the race at about 4:30 p.m.
The regatta is hosted by Harvey and Alice Diamond, parents of Jennifer Diamond and founders of the foundation named in her honor. Jennifer passed away from a rare form of cancer.
The foundation strives to bring awareness about cancer and supplies libraries to various facilities with the latest information on cancer detection, treatments and support, helping to provide the tools to “treat the mind and body as one.”
Three classes of sailboats will be participating in the 2009 Regatta: Class A, Class B and Cruising Class, determined by the configuration of the boat. Racing keelboats and cruiser keelboats are also invited to participate. Costs to participate range from $64 to $90, depending on the size of the boat.
Availability on the spectator boats (free with donations welcome) is limited and will be on a first come, first served basis. Arrival is suggested at 10:30 a.m. for the noon race.
