Nearly 40 local volunteers with the Los Angeles County Fire Department Community Emergency Response Team (CERT) received their certification during a graduation ceremony November 21st at Burton Chace Park in Marina del Rey.

The CERT volunteers were trained by county fire department personnel during three eight-hour classes to earn their certification.

The participants received training on a variety of emergency response procedures including identifying a potential disaster, creating a disaster plan, creating a disaster supply kit and triage to determine the severity of the victim’s injuries, CERT organizer Lowell Safier said.

The volunteers also learned how to check structures for weaknesses, help rescue people and their pets and administer victims’ conditions and prioritize their needs.

Safier said CERT is seeking additional community volunteers and encourages residents to participate.
