Part one of the Champagne Series took place Saturday, January 12th, under a light breeze and sunny skies on the Santa Monica Bay.
The series will rap up Saturday, July 26th, but until then the story is about the emergence of the Open 5.70 class. There was just one of these little European sport boats in the series last year and Saturday there were six racing.
They were the largest one design fleet in the contest and only the PHRF (Pacific Handicap Racing Fleet) A class had more boats, with seven.
The Martin 242 showed with six boats, the J 80s had three and PHRF B also had three boats on the line.
