Mt. Olive Lutheran Church is offering its third annual Christmas service completely in German at 3 p.m. on Christmas Eve, Monday, December 24th, at Mt. Olive Lutheran Church, 1343 Ocean Park Blvd., Santa Monica.

The all-German language service, called Deutscher Weihnachtsgottesdienst, will feature a Krippenspiel (Christmas pageant) with music by Johann Sebastian Bach, traditional hymns of the season, and Holy Communion.

Mt. Olive’s pastor, Stephanie Jaeger, a former university professor with a Ph.D. in German studies, says the church is striving to meet the needs of a growing community among local German Americans.

“There is all this activity happening, initiatives for German speakers on the Westside,” Jaeger says. Although she didn’t know what to expect of the first German language service, she was “surprised at the number of people who came. They were so grateful that they could sing, pray, and hear the Christmas story in their native language.”

Mt. Olive plans to offer a German Easter service in the spring.
