The Church in Ocean Park will honor political activists Tom Hayden, Elizabeth Keller and John Maceri at its annual Communitas Awards event at 6:30 p.m. Saturday, September 9th.
The church is at 235 Hill St., Santa Monica. Dinner and the awards ceremony, which includes spoken insights by the honorees and music by A Cappella Jam and the Church in Ocean Park Choir, is $35. There is also a sliding fee scale.
Annually, the event draws a sellout crowd for the fundraiser, which includes a silent auction and raffle.
Funds are raised for the church’s buildings along Hill Street between Second and Third Streets, its social justice programs and other activities.
The annual awards are a gesture to honor people who embody the spirit of communitas, the Latin word for community.
This year’s emcee will be the Rev. Jim Conn, former minister of the Church in Ocean Park, who is now director of new ministries for the United Methodist Church California-Pacific Conference.
