A group of children struggling with serious illnesses or disabilities was able to see up close and personal how a local U.S. Coast Guard crew works to save lives during a visit to Marina del Rey Nov. 2.

The Coast Guard and the Los Angeles County Fire Department-Baywatch crews in Marina del Rey teamed up for the event with Koru Care, a New Zealand organization that provides assistance to youths with terminal illnesses or permanent disabilities.

Nearly 40 youths were treated to a tour of Coast Guard facilities, and a boat ride on either a Baywatch boat or the Coast Guard cutter Halibut, a Coast Guard spokesman said.

The youths also witnessed a helicopter rescue demonstration performed by an MH-65 Dolphin helicopter crew from Air Station Los Angeles.

During the middle portion of the demonstration, the helicopter’s rescue swimmer swam over to the boats and met with the children.
