Coeur d’Alene Avenue Elementary School in Venice has received a $20,000 grant for after-school programs from the Suave beauty product line for having the highest number of mothers attend the Suave Back to Beauty Moms-Only Field Trip.

Coeur d’Alene principal Rex Patton announced the school as the winner of the Suave grant during the morning assembly Monday, November 26th, at the school, 810 Coeur d’Alene Ave., Venice.

The school was also recently named a winner of the Los Angeles County Music Center’s 2007 BRAVO Award for academic excellence in the arts, in the Los Angeles County school category.

Last month Suave issued Los Angeles-area mothers a permission slip to put themselves back on the “to do” list at the Suave Back to Beauty Moms-Only Field Trip. The event was held at the LuKaRo Salon in Beverly Hills, where the mothers received makeovers from celebrity hairstylist Luke O’Connor and his team.

Suave promised to award a $20,000 grant for after-school programs to the Los Angeles-area school with the most moms who attended the day of beauty and pampering — and Coeur d’Alene came out on top.

School officials said the Suave grant is being awarded at an especially needy time, as the school’s funding was recently reduced, directly affecting its after-school programs.

“Categorical” federal and state program funds were reduced by over 50 percent this school year to their lowest level in many years, say school officials, and support from grants and partnerships is essential to maintain Coeur d’Alene’s after-school programs, which include academic tutoring, violin, music, math club, dance, and fifth-grade girls chorus.
