J.R.’s Comedy Club will launch a stand-up comedy series at Earth, Wind & Flour restaurant in Santa Monica, beginning Friday and Saturday, April 20 and 21.
Comedy shows will take place every Friday and Saturday at 9 p.m. at the restaurant, 2222 Wilshire Blvd., Santa Monica.
Santa Monica comedian Randy Lubas and his wife, Diana, started the original J.R.’s Comedy Club 14 years ago in Valencia and it has become a popular venue to see top comedians on stage. In the past four years, Lubas and his partner say they have turned Ventura Harbor Comedy Club into one of the fastest growing comedy clubs in the country.
A longtime patron of Earth, Wind & Flour, Lubas recalled how he recently spoke with Dennis Klempner, the owner of the 31-year-old eatery about the need for a local place for people to enjoy great food and laugh-out-loud comedy. With a handshake, he said they decided to start J.R.’s Comedy Club in Santa Monica.
The cover charge for each show will be $15, with occasional special events, which will cost $20. Earth, Wind & Flour has created a special dinner show menu, which will offer several dishes for $14.99. There is ample street parking and valet parking for just $2. People coming for dinner are encouraged to arrive between 7:30 and 8 p.m., while those coming for the show alone should get there at 8:30 p.m. There will be a two-item minimum per person and dinner will count as one item.
The club hopes to present national headline comedians and will allow them to do their full 45-minute headline shows, Lubas said. This will be different from the showcase format at most of the Hollywood clubs.
Some of the comics who have performed at J.R.’s in Valencia include, Larry Miller, Craig Shoemaker, Emo Philips, Dave Coulier, Bobby Collins, and Carol Leifer. Lubas hopes to bring all of them to Santa Monica.
For the April 20-21 show, Lubas will perform himself, with additional headliner John DiCrosta. Lubas, who has performed comedy all over the world, is also the producer of the Ventura Comedy Festival, has a reality show in development, and is an actor and a writer.
