Gerri Pisciotta, a Westchester resident who is a marriage and family therapist, recently returned from a trip to the Gulf Coast to do crisis counseling following Hurricane Katrina.
She was sent to the area by her employer, Magellan Behavioral Health, to be a member of the company’s national Critical Incident Stress Management team.
Pisciotta worked in Mississippi towns, including Gulfport, Long Beach, Pascagoula, Moss Point, and Biloxi.
“Slowly as life creeps back to normal, there are signs of routine returning,” Pisciotta said. “A mailman delivers mail to a makeshift mailbox outside what used to be someone’s home.
“People sit on twisted front porches in chairs that probably weren’t that crooked a few weeks ago. They wave as we drive by. In the midst of all the loss and devastation, people still try to connect with each other.”
Pisciotta will provide crisis counseling in Louisiana later this month.
