The City of Los Angeles Department of Public Works has awarded a contract for construction of a new City of Los Angeles Fire Department fire station at 11970 Venice Blvd. in Mar Vista.

The $7 million contract for the fire station was awarded Wednesday, March 16th to Royal Construction Corporation.

The new fire station will replace the City Fire Station 62 located at 3632 Centinela Ave. in Mar Vista.

The new fire station will be larger than the old one and it will meet new design standards for a fire and paramedic station.

The new fire station will be approximately 16,000 square feet and will feature sustainable environmental designs such as recycled building materials, locally manufactured materials and landscaping.

Construction funding comes from City of Los Angeles Proposition F, a $532 million voter-approved initiative also known as the Fire and Animal Facilities Bond Initiative.

Fire Station 62 is approximately 4,190 square feet. City Public Works officials say that the fire station is overcrowded and has outdated equipment.

The new fire station will be designed to provide services for an area that is approximately six square miles.
