Santa Monica College’s Corsair newspaper earned 17 awards, including three first-place honors, in the Journalism Association of Community Colleges’ Southern California competition held recently at California State University-Fullerton.

The mail-in awards covered the work of the staff in the spring semester, and the on-the-spot competition featured the work of the current Corsair staff.

Twenty-one journalism students from SMC participated in the conference, which also featured many workshops conducted by media professionals.

The three first-place awards for Corsair staff at the conference included: Jonathan Bue for editorial cartoon, Stephanie Forshee for critical review and Albany Katz for feature photo.

In the mail-in categories, Christopher Salguero won first-place for sports action photo, while four second-place awards were given to Tieg Slattery for column writing, Indah Datau and Antoine Themistocleou for inside page layout, Dan Bluemel for news story and the Corsair staff for editorial writing.
