The Hart Pulse Dance Company will present the third annual MixMatch Dance Festival featuring 15 choreographers from around the world Friday through Sunday, September 11th through 13th at the Electric Lodge, 1416 Electric Ave., Venice.

Performances are scheduled at 8:30 p.m. Friday, September 11th and 12th, and 2 p.m. Sunday, September 13th. Tickets are $13.

This year’s festival brings many forms of modern, contemporary and Asian inspired movement to the Electric Lodge stage.

The dance company began its annual MixMatch Dance Festival in 2007 with the hopes of presenting professional choreographers from diverse dance backgrounds together in one performance.

Growing up in the Central Valley, Amanda Hart, producer and director of the MixMatch Dance Festival, said she always felt that professional dance performances were something only “well off” people could enjoy. After moving to Los Angeles and receiving her bachelor of fine arts in dance from the California Institute of the Arts, Hart said she wanted to take advantage of the

access to performances by world renowned dance companies.

But the problem that she found her self constantly faced with was the ticket costs, she said.

With the goal to someday start her own company, Hart teamed up with fellow Cal Arts alumnus Sandra Rasor, in order to produce the first annual MixMatch Dance Festival.

By mixing together different dance forms into one show and believing that audience members would find their “match” with at least one dance, the name of the festival was discovered, Hart said.

Once established, Hart’s newly gathered Hart Pulse Dance

Company took over production and has since expanded the festival’s goals.

The inaugural festival brought a few submissions which doubled in 2008 and tripled this year.

Audience members are

encouraged to stay after the performance and mingle with the choreographers and dancers in the lobby.

A possible 30 to 45 choreographers and dance companies will be accepted at next year’s festival to present works in ballet, modern, contemporary, tap, hip hop, African, Celtic, Butoh, Chinese, folk, jazz, swing, Spanish,

salsa and more.

The 2009 choreographers include Hart, Holly Fletcher, Shannon Phillips, Heather Dale’s Opus Mixtus Post Jazz Ensemble, Soom Dance Company, Dorcas Roman Dance Theatre, Intersection Dance Project, Louie Cornejo, Victoria Brown, Marko Westwood, Michelle Shear, Beth Gamwell Gurrette, Amanda Killian, Jhon R. Stronks and Rachel Pace.
