Cowan Avenue Elementary School in Westchester and the Loyola Marymount University Family of Schools will host the elementary school’s first debate team competition featuring nine- and ten-year-old students Friday, June 5th.
The debate competition is scheduled at 6 p.m. at Cowan Elementary School, 7615 Cowan Ave., Westchester.
Through a public forum setting, the students will debate the topic “Should children be given an allowance for doing household chores?” Contestants will explore whether parents should buy their children’s services or if parents will be teaching children a worthwhile lesson that will serve them in the future.
A panel of judges will rate the students’ performance in several categories on a scale of one to ten and count all ten evenly for a total of 100 points.
Among the invited debate guests are: county Supervisor Mark Ridley-Thomas, Tavis Smiley, Antwone Fisher, Los Angeles Unified School District School Board members, Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa, Councilmembers Jan Perry, Bill Rosendahl, Bernard Parks, Herb Wesson, Janice Hahn and Jack Weiss, and Judge Greg Mathis.
