Internationally renowned musicians Dame Cleo Laine and Sir John Dankworth and Friends will appear in a free concert with maestro Frank Fetta and the Marina del Rey Summer Symphony at 7 p.m. Thursday, August 20th, in Burton Chace Park, 13650 Mindanao Way, Marina del Rey.
They will be heard in music for symphony orchestra written or arranged by Dankworth, and classics from jazz to Broadway sung by Laine.
Laine and Dankworth have been international stars at the forefront of the entertainment industry for nearly a half century — Dankworth as a performer, composer and conductor; Laine as a Grammy Award-winning singing star, acclaimed actress and recording artist.
In 1997, Queen Elizabeth II recognized Laine’s services to music by naming her a Dame Commander of the British Empire. In 2006, in tribute to Dankworth’s services to music, the Queen knighted him, thus paying unusual tribute to a husband and wife whose popularity in their native England and throughout the world continues to be admired.
This concert holds particular interest for the Marina del Rey Summer Symphony because Dankworth has written a new work for the orchestra, Pacific West, which will receive its first performance at this concert, a symphony spokesperson said. Among many selections, Laine will sing several medleys, including music of George Gershwin and Johnny Mercer.
