For the third consecutive year, Malibu family physician and Santa Monica resident Dr. David Baron has been elected chief of staff at Santa Monica-UCLA Medical Center and Orthopaedic Hospital.
Baron has a history with the hospital dating back to his days as a family medicine resident in 1988. Before becoming chief of staff in 2006, he served as the medical center’s vice chief of staff for two years, as well as chair of its Family Medicine Department.
“This continues to be an exciting time for our medical center with the recent openings of our new Nethercutt Emergency Center, Oncology/Medicine Unit and Birthing Center,” Baron said. “I look forward to working closely with hospital administrators and my medical staff colleagues to build on the momentum we have gained in establishing this hospital as a cornerstone of the UCLA Health System.”
A 16-year Santa Monica resident, Baron has a “concierge medical practice” called Primary Caring of Malibu, which uses a membership model to provide patients with a wide range of personalized services and amenities. He is a board-certified family physician who completed his residency at the medical center in 1991 before entering private practice in Malibu.
Baron attended medical school at the University of Pennsylvania and earned his undergraduate degree from Amherst College in Massachusetts. He also serves as a medical expert for KNX Radio.
He is a singer/songwriter and pianist who performs with other physicians in a band called Malpractice. The band has played at various local venues and events, including Santa Monica-UCLA’s 80th anniversary celebration in 2006.
Joining Baron as officers on the 2008 Executive Medical Board are doctors Denise Sur and Peter Lefevre, who were elected vice chief of staff and secretary-treasurer, respectively. Sur is director of the UCLA Family Medicine Residency Program and Lefevre is an internal medicine specialist with the UCLA Medical Group in Santa Monica.
