Santa Monica resident and Malibu family physician David Baron has been elected chief of staff of the Santa Monica-UCLA Medical Center for 2006 by board members.

Baron had served as the medical center vice chief of staff for the past two years as well as chair of its Family Medicine Department.

“This is an exciting time of construction and modernization as Santa Monica-UCLA Medical Center’s rebuilding project moves toward completion,” Baron said.

“I look forward to working closely with the current medical staff and newly arriving physicians from Orthopaedic Hospital to forge a new and unified group of caring health professionals,” he said.

A 14-year Santa Monica resident, Baron runs a concierge medical practice called Primary Caring of Malibu, which uses a membership model to provide patients with a range of personalized services.

He is a board-certified family physician who completed his residency in family medicine at the medical center in 1991.

He attended medical school at the University of Pennsylvania and received an undergraduate degree from Amherst College in Massachusetts.

Baron is also a singer, songwriter, and pianist who performs with other physicians in a band called Malpractice.

The band has performed at numerous events, including several hospital functions.

Joining Baron as officers on the medical center Executive Medical Board are Chester Griffiths, vice chief of staff, and Denise Sur, secretary-treasurer.

Griffiths is an ear, nose, and throat specialist based in West Los Angeles and Sur is the director of the UCLA Family Medicine Residency Program.

Other members on the Executive Medical Board, which oversees medical affairs at the medical center, are Gerald Finerman, Denise Freese, William Growdon, Peter Lefevre, Philip Levin, James Luck, Bernard Weintraub, and Dennis Woo.
