Los Angeles County lifeguards recovered the dead body of a man that was found floating approximately two miles off-shore in the Santa Monica Bay Sunday, February 22nd.

Lifeguards were called to the scene by a passing boater who discovered the man’s body about two miles southwest of the Santa Monica Pier, said Sgt. Bob Gray of the county Sheriff’s Department homicide division. The body, which appeared to be of an elderly man, was “in the advanced stages of decomposition,” Gray said.

The county coroner’s office is conducting an investigation and has not yet identified the man. Rescuers found no signs of foul play in the man’s death, Gray said.

Investigators have not determined the cause of death but Gray said the body may have been in the water for up to a couple of weeks. The Sheriff’s Department has checked the missing persons database and contacted the Coast Guard and local law enforcement.
