Betty Setsuko Katayama, a 30-year resident of the Del Rey area and known to family and friends as Betty Boop, passed away Friday, July 30th, at Kaiser Hospital in West Los Angeles. She was 75.
She spent 30 years active in childcare for working parents.
She was a volunteer for the Culver City Senior Center and also with the Saint Augustine By-the-Sea Episcopal Church “SAVES” program, providing food to the poor.
She also spent many hours helping at Light & Life Church and school and was a member of the Venice Free Methodist Church.
She was born March 7th, 1929, in Washington State and is survived by her husband Mitsuo Katayama of Del Rey; her son Gary and his wife Cherrie of Venice; four grandchildren and six great-grandchildren; brothers Ben, George, Kaz, Giro, Sam, Fred and Kaz Nakagawa; and sister Toshiko Katayama.
She was cremated and ashes were spread at sea. She requested no wake or funeral.
The family suggests that in lieu of flowers, donations in her name may be made to the American Cancer Society.
