Earthbeat — The Flower of the Season, a four-day solo dance series produced by Venice butoh dancer Oguri and Body Weather Laboratory, is scheduled for 8 p.m. Thursday through Saturday; and 5 p.m. Sunday, April 28th to May 1st, at Beyond Baroque, 681 Venice Blvd., Venice. Admission is $15.
Each dancer gets one day in the theater to design and set their lighting and set the stage for their dance performance that night.
The concept of the dance series is explained by a Body Weather Laboratory spokesperson: “Dance and performance are temporal arts that exist in the present just as the splendor of a flower is fleeting.
“A flower seeks light, growing and developing accordingly. It finds the right time and place to blossom.
“It shares its beauty as a function of its being, not as an arbitrary choice.
“The performances will be the unique expression and seasonal response of each solo dancer.”
Different dancers will be featured each night.
Roxanne Steinberg, artist-in-residence at the Electric Lodge in Venice, will perform at 8 p.m. Thursday, April 28th.
Sherwood Chen will perform 8 p.m. Friday, April 29th.
Boaz Barkan will perform 8 p.m. Saturday, April 30th.
Butoh dancer and Japanese native Oguri, known for redefining the boundaries between performer and audience, will perform at 5 p.m. Sunday, May 1st.
