The Santa Monica Elks have announced the winners of their annual Americanism Essay Contest. This year’s essay subject was “Why I Am Proud to be an American.”

The contest is open to boys and girls in fifth, sixth, seventh and eighth grades. Division One is for fifth- and sixth-graders and Division Two is for seventh- and eighth-graders.

The Division One winners are all from Walgrove Avenue Elementary School in Mar Vista and taught by Robert Borowski.

Division One winners are Amber Villabbos, first place; Chaya Katz, second place; and Allexis Oriz, third place.

Division Two winners are all from Santa Monica-based St. Monica Elementary School’s seventh and eighth grades and taught by Erin Barnhill.

They are Karen Masumoto, first place; Alisa Mandania, second place; and Gina Drutz, third place.
