The City of Santa Monica Environmental Programs Division has been renamed the Office of Sustainability and the Environment, following the division’s move from the city Public Works Department to the City Manager’s Office.
The move and the name change were made to elevate and centralize the role of sustainability in the municipal organization and allow for greater integration and coordination of green programs and initiatives throughout the city, a spokesperson for the sustainability office said.
Sustainability has been a City Council priority for many years and Santa Monica is nationally and internationally recognized for its leadership in this area, city officials said.
The Office of Sustainability and the Environment oversees all policy and outreach efforts related to sustainability and environmental issues. The office also works with city departments and with residents, businesses and other community stakeholders to promote sustainability throughout Santa Monica.
