Esther Smicklas, mother of Santa Monica city councilwoman and Los Angeles County Metropolitan Transportation Authority director Pam O’Connor, died Friday, December 3rd. She was 93.

Smicklas was an avid supporter of the Santa Monica Police and Fire Departments.

Smicklas never drove a car and used public transportation throughout her life.

She participated in Big Blue Bus “Roadeos” as a passenger on the bus driven by her daughter, Councilwoman O’Connor.

Smicklas, an artist, enjoyed drawing, sketching, and reading.

She spent much time at the Santa Monica and Los Angeles public libraries.

She also frequently attended the Santa Monica Pier Twilight Dance series during the summers, enjoying the diverse music and performers at the pier.

“We will always remember Esther and her indomitable spirit,” said Santa Monica mayor Richard Bloom.

Smicklas was born in 1911 in Kankakee, Illinois. She married Emil Smicklas, a Chicago police detective and had three children — Pam O’Connor, Tyke Caravelli and Emil Smicklas, Jr.

She had six grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.

Smicklas will be buried in Chicago.

In lieu of flowers, the family recommends that donations be sent to the Santa Monica Police Activities League and the Friends of the Santa Monica Library.
