The Arena 1 Gallery in Santa Monica will present the exhibit Breaking in Two: Provocative Visions of Motherhood beginning Saturday, Feb. 11 and continuing through April 14.

An opening reception is scheduled from 6 to 9 p.m. Feb. 11 at Arena 1, 3026 Airport Ave., Santa Monica.

Part of the Getty’s Pacific Standard Time, the Breaking in Two exhibit features a multi-cultural group of four generations of nationally and internationally recognized artist-mothers who were selected to represent the multi-faceted and changing realities of motherhood. The works by the artist-mothers integrate the maternal experience, the relationship to the body, the child, the family and the society at large, an exhibit spokesperson says.

Breaking in Two includes painting and drawing, sculpture, collage and assemblage, installation, photography, film/video, poetry/writing and performance.

The exhibition explores the intimate experience of the artist as mother, and the evolving image and place of the mother, which underwent significant transformations during the women’s movement of the late 1960s and 70s, the spokesperson said.

Curated by Bruria Finkel, the exhibition will be featured in the documentary “Breaking in Two,” sponsored by distributor Women Make Movies, and produced by Sabine Sighicelli.

Gallery hours are noon to 6 p.m. Tuesdays through Saturdays.
