The Emeritus College Art Gallery at Santa Monica College will present the exhibit Trent Reynolds: Green Man Paintings beginning Thursday, Sept. 9 through Oct. 15.

The opening reception is scheduled from 5 to 6:30 p.m. Sept. 9 in the gallery, on the first floor of Emeritus College, 1227 Second St., Santa Monica.

Reynolds said that over the years, the green man in his paintings has represented different things — “the devil on my shoulder,” “sickness but also life,” “over-indulgence and apathy but also abundance and appetite.”

“They only reaffirm to me that the answer is usually not one or the other but a little bit of both,” Reynolds said. “He stands, or sits, as a witness that one can’t be without the other. The green man is me.”

The artist uses several things in his paintings, including photographs and images, glue, and layers of glazed and opaque paints.

The exhibit consists of five large-scale paintings and two installations of multiple portraits.

Emeritus College, SMC’s widely praised program founded 35 years ago, currently serves about 3,500 older adults with 150 classes and special programs.

Parking is available next door in Santa Monica public Parking Structure No. 2. Gallery hours are 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Monday through Friday.
