Saint John’s Health Center in Santa Monica has expanded its Fast Track Service adjacent to the health center’s Emergency Department.

Fast Track Service enables patients with minor injuries and illnesses to receive care more quickly in treatment rooms specifically for patients with cuts, bruises, coughs and colds.

The service has been expanded from three beds to ten.

“The overall goal is to keep the entire Emergency Department flowing smoothly and efficiently,” said Dr. Russ Kino, medical director of the department. “We believe people should receive care as quickly as possible.

“This expansion will reduce wait times.”

Fast Track Service operates every day from 11 a.m. to 11 p.m.

Patients are screened when entering the Emergency Department in a triage process to determine whether they require emergency care or should be sent to Fast Track Service for non-emergency care.

Since establishing Fast Track Service, patients who use the service are seen, treated and discharged in less than an hour after entering the Emergency Department, health center officials said.

Patients with more severe conditions are discharged in an average of two and a half hours.
