Retired Los Angeles Superior Court Judge David B. Finkel and Dr. Andrew Walzer have been elected as chair and vice chair, respectively, of the Santa Monica Community College (SMC) District Board of Trustees for 2010.

Finkel succeeds Louise Jaffe as chair and Walzer replaces Finkel as vice chair.

Finkel is a 45-year resident of Santa Monica and a former judge and presiding judge of the Santa Monica Municipal Court. He was elected to the SMC board in November 2006.

The former judge has a long career in public service and education. In addition to serving as a judge on two courts, he also served on the Santa Monica City Council.

He received his bachelor of arts degree from the University of Chicago and his J.D. from the University of Southern California School of Law.

He has been married to Bruria Finkel, an accomplished artist, sculptor and curator for 45 years.

Walzer is a tenured associate professor of Humanities at Los Angeles City College, where he has taught since 2004. Prior to that, he was an adjunct instructor at SMC, Cal Poly Pomona and Cal State- Dominguez Hills. He is also the student success coordinator at LACC, working to ensure strong success, retention, graduation and transfer rates.

Walzer graduated with a Ph.D. in American Studies from the University of Minnesota in 1997 and earned a B.A. in politics from the University of California, Santa Cruz in 1983. He has lived in Santa Monica for seven years and was elected to the college board in November 2006.

He is married to Zonia Walzer Martinez and they have a one-year-old son, Andrew Walzer Martinez.
