The Fourth Annual Venice Community BBQ and Picnic will take place at the Oakwood Recreation Center, 767 California Ave., from noon to 5 p.m. Saturday, July 31.

The Venice Neighborhood Council is presenting the community event, which features a free BBQ, music and entertainment and prizes provided from residents and merchants of Venice.

Firefighters from Los Angeles Fire Department Station No. 63 in Venice will bring their trucks and serve the BBQ meals.

Community members can also bring their own BBQ dishes to compete for Best Ribs, Chicken, or Pork. Sides and desserts are provided by the people.

The music performances will start with a gospel set by the Second Community Baptist

Church and conclude with JTRoss, Venice’s own “harmonica bluesman.”

There will be a bounce house for the children, a magician, and possibly a puppet show, as well as games for both adults and children, including a three-legged relay race and greased watermelon relay race.

Among other festivities planned is a watermelon eating contest.
