The sixth annual Children’s Tumor Foundation’s L.A. 5k Walk is scheduled to begin at 9 a.m. Saturday, May 14 in Westchester Park.
The event will be held to raise funds and awareness for neurofibromatosis, a genetic disorder of the nervous system that affects more than 1 in every 3,000 children, according to an event spokeswoman. Currently, there are no treatments and no cure for the disease and it strikes people of all ethnic origins worldwide.
NBC Channel Four weatherman Fritz Coleman, New York Jets kicker Nick Folk and the Laker Girls are slated to make appearances at the event.
All funds raised from the 5k will go directly to the Children’s Tumor Foundation in support of medical research, patient support and public education.
Zachary Marks, a Westchester youth who suffers from neurofibromatosis but is nearing the end of his chemotherapy treatments, is scheduled to give a speech at the event.
