Five airline employees will begin a cross-country bicycle ride Sunday, April 2nd, at Dockweiler Beach in Playa del Rey in honor of the 33 flight crew members who were killed in the terrorist attacks of September 11th, 2001.

Thomas Heidenberger, a U.S. Airways captain, has organized the “Airline Ride Across America” to pay tribute to the flight crew members and raise money for each of three planned 9/11 memorials at the World Trade Center, the Pentagon and Shanksville, Pennsylvania.

The cross-country ride will leave Dockweiler Beach at 8 a.m.

Heidenberger’s wife, Michele, was a flight attendant on flight 77, which crashed into the Pentagon.

He and four other airline employees will ride 3,500 miles across 15 states in the hope of raising $100,000 for each of the three memorials.

The bicyclists plan to devote each day to a member of the 9/11 flight crew, with the first day in honor of Captain Charles “Chic” Burlingame III of flight 77.

The ride will end at the Pentagon Tuesday, May 9th, in memory of Michele Heidenberger.
