The visiting Westchester High School Comets fell behind early and were knocked out of the Los Angeles City Section Championship Division playoffs in the first round with a 47-6 loss to top-seeded Birmingham High School Thursday, November 16th.
After tying for third place in the Western League, the Comets (4-7) earned the 16th seed in the city playoffs.
But Birmingham proved to be too much for Westchester, which fell behind 28-0 at halftime.
Birmingham added 19 more points in the third quarter before Westchester picked up its only score late in the fourth quarter.
Senior quarterback Isiah Barton, who finished 14-of-29 passing for 192 yards with four interceptions, put the Comets on the scoreboard with a two-yard touchdown run.
Westchester wide receiver Khallid Muhammad finished with four receptions for 104 yards in the game.
In their first trip to the Southern Section playoffs in three years, the visiting St. Bernard High School Vikings faced a giant of an opponent in Oaks Christian High School of Westlake Village and were handily defeated 70-9 in the first-round game Friday, November 17th.
The Vikings (3-8) achieved their preseason goal of making the playoffs after finishing in third place in the Del Rey League, but they had to face one of the top-ranked teams in the country.
St. Bernard went into halftime trailing 42-3 after kicker Steven Locke gave the Vikings their first points on a 38-yard field goal.
Junior running back Daniel Chavez scored the only touchdown for St. Bernard on a one-yard run in the middle of the fourth quarter.
