An auction to benefit For the Arts, a program that raises money for arts education in local schools, is planned from 6 to 9 p.m. Thursday, October 11th, at Track 16 Gallery, 2525 Michigan Ave., C1, Santa Monica. Admission is $125.
Art chairs Laddie John Dill, Astrid Preston and Ruth Weisberg will present 75 works of art donated by local artists including John Baldessari, Larry Bell, Karen Carson, Tony Berlant, Ed Ruscha, Julius Shulman, June Wayne, Peter Alexander and Lita Albuquerque.
Organizers expect about 300 guests to attend and bid on paintings, sculptures and photographs. Monies raised will go to support arts education in the Santa Monica-Malibu public schools.
Robert Berman of Santa Monica Auctions will be conducting the live auction at 8:15 p.m. The fundraiser will include wine, ginger margaritas by Elixir G and hors d’oeuvres by Joe’s Restaurant and Joe’s soon to open Bar Pintxo. The Santa Monica High School String Quartet will perform at the event.
For the Arts is a community-wide effort to create a permanent endowment fund to support music, visual arts, dance and drama in the Santa Monica-Malibu public schools.
The Education Foundation of Santa Monica-Malibu began 22 years ago to fund school programs that state money did not.
For the Arts is the arts affiliate of the foundation, which formed in 2001 and began fundraising by 2003.
Since then, $2 million has been raised to endow ongoing arts programs in the Santa Monica-Malibu Unified School District.
For the Arts has spearheaded a community effort to raise a $15 million endowment to ensure that every student in a public school within the Santa Monica-Malibu Unified School District, beginning in the earliest grades, receives a broad introduction to the arts in the four main areas of music, visual arts, dance and drama.
