Bruce Helvie, a former Marina del Rey resident, passed away Monday, November 27th, at his home in Oswego, New York at the age of 57.

He was born on April 3rd, 1949 and was a canvas stitcher who learned the craft as a tent stitcher in the U.S. Army.

His work can be seen on many boats docked in Marina del Rey, like the famous tent in E Basin. This black and red circus tent can be seen on the back of Nightingale, a black sailboat.

Helvie also did stitch work for Norm’s Fabrics in Marina del Rey, spent several years stitching in Hawaii and continued stitching in Oswego.

Helvie is survived by his parents and four sisters.
