The 16th annual Keep L.A. Running charity 5K run/walk, 10K run, kids dash and coastal bike cruise will take place Sunday morning, July 12th at Dockweiler State Beach in Playa del Rey.
Henry Rono of Kenya, considered one of the greatest distance runners in history, will be the honorary spokesperson and starter of this year’s Keep LA Running. Rono will also run the 5K at the event.
In the summer of 1978 Rono produced one of the most amazing feats in track and field history. In the span of 81 days, he broke four world records — the 10,000 meters (27:22.5), the 5,000 meters (13:08.4), the 3,000-meter steeplechase (8:05.4), and the 3,000 meters (7:32.1), an achievement unparalleled in the history of distance running.
More than 2,000 runners, walkers and bike riders are expected to join the race while helping to raise money for children with cancer, premature born babies, and other charities.
The event offers a fast, flat course overlooking the ocean, a health and fitness expo and beach barbecue along the shore where Imperial Highway stops at the beach.
Special trophies will be awarded for team competition in the 5K and 10K runs. A team can enter an unlimited number of runners (male and female), but only the highest five finishers for each team count for the team competition. Members of running clubs registering as a team receive a $5 discount.
The 10/20-mile coastal bike cruise begins at 7:30 am, which winds south from the start on the bike path along the ocean. The 5K run/walk will begin at 8 a.m. and the 10K at 8:30 am. Children can run in the kids dash, which will begin at 9:45 a.m.
Many local elected officials will be on hand to encourage the runners, walkers and bike riders. The Laker Girls will lead the aerobic warm-up and the ChivaGirls, who will have a booth and will be signing autographs, will be available for pictures.
