Marina del Rey resident and former Santa Monica High School principal Dr. Ilene W. Straus has been appointed by Gov. Jerry Brown to the California State Board of Education.
Straus currently serves as an assistant superintendent for educational services with the Beverly Hills Unified School District.
Straus was senior director of secondary education for the Santa Monica-Malibu Unified School District in 2006, and she also served as the chief educational officer and principal of Santa Monica High School (Samohi) from 2002 to 2006.
Prior to her service at Samohi, Strauss was principal of Lincoln Middle School in Santa Monica from 1986 to 2002. She received the California Secondary Principal of the Year award in 1991.
A Democrat, Straus replaces Louis “Bill” Honig, who has withdrawn his name. State Board of Education appointments require Senate confirmation, and the compensation is $100 per diem, a spokesperson for the governor said.
