The city of Santa Monica Resource Recovery & Recycling Division will hold a quarterly free compost giveaway event for residents Saturday, Jan. 21.

The event will begin at 7 a.m. at the City Yards, 2500 Michigan Ave., Santa Monica.

Residents will be provided up to five large burlap coffee sacks of nutrient-rich compost per household. The compost was made from the city’s green cart program.

According to the recycling division, the use of compost in gardens is an effective way to improve soil health, increase plant production, and reduce the use of water, chemical fertilizers and pesticides.
