Former Westchester resident Kristen Holm, a teacher at Lucille Smith Elementary School in Lawndale, has been honored for her efforts to help children get physically active and fit.

Rogers, a graduate of St. Bernard High School in Playa del Rey, was named the gold medal winner in the Teacher of the Year category of the Governor’s Council on Physical Fitness and Sports’ 2011 Spotlight Awards, presented by the Anthem Blue Cross Foundation.

During a ceremony at the school Oct. 5, Kenny Rogers, the executive director of the Governor’s Council, presented the school a $10,000 check in honor of Holm’s recognition.

The teacher was selected for the award based on her efforts to promote children’s health and fitness inside and outside of school, according to the council.

At Lucille Smith Elementary Holm has created a running club, a Healthy Fun Week, Nutrition Nights, Fun Fitness Fridays, a Walk and Bike to School Day and an Annual Bike Parade. Holm has even brought in a physical fitness trainer to work out with teachers after school, so that her colleagues can be better fitness role models for their students.
