The Venice High School Alumni Association has awarded $110,000 in scholarships to graduating seniors.

The alumni association scholarships, ranging from $1,000 to $16,000, were presented to 23 students during the Senior Awards Night at Venice High Thursday, June 3rd.

The students will be putting these scholarships to use as they continue their education at the University of California-Berkeley, Boston University, UCLA, UC-Davis, Emory University, Cal State-Northridge, Santa Monica College, as well as trade technology schools.

One of the scholarships that has special meaning is awarded in memory of Scott Antolick, who was a senior when he died of heart complications, an alumni association spokesperson said. Antolick’s parents, Art and Penny, give a $5,000 scholarship yearly.

Many scholarships are awarded in memory of faculty and family: Velma Ott Smith/Blackwood, Leonard Gottlieb, Michael Pomerantz, G.O. Turney, Lois Larson Peterson, Shirley Hall, Bill Paney and the Korean War Memorial. Two scholarships are from faculty and associations: Grant Francis, and the Woman’s City Club.

Three other scholarships are named for the honorees that the association honored earlier this year — Paul Belli, Phyllis Hayashibara and Cliff Warner.
