The Los Angeles County Department of Beaches and Harbors has been awarded a $5,000 grant from the Santa Monica Bay Restoration Foundation to support outreach efforts for clean boating practices to improve water quality in Marina del Rey.

Such outreach includes the 2011 Southern California Dockwalker Training program for volunteers. The restoration foundation and Beaches and Harbors, in conjunction with the Department of Boating and Waterways and the California Coastal Commission’s Boating Clean and Green Program, participated in the effort to become “dockwalkers,” conducting face-to-face boater education about environmentally-sound boating practices.

Foundation and Beaches and Harbors staff also shared a booth at Marina Fest 2011, where boaters received a free tote bag containing a boater kit and educational materials outlining clean boating practices.

Additional outreach efforts to increase boater and public awareness about their connection to water quality issues have included new, informational pump-out signage with a location map designed and fabricated for each anchorage in Marina del Rey.
