Loyola Marymount University (LMU) plans to confer an honorary doctorate in Humane Letters Thursday, November 13th, on His Eminence Archbishop Demetrios in recognition of his role in the growing rapprochement between the Catholic and Orthodox churches.
Demetrios is a spiritual leader for America’s 1.5 million Greek Orthodox Church members, LMU officials note. He is widely recognized as an international humanitarian leader who has reached out to Christian, Jewish and Muslim leaders.
As part of LMU’s commitment to fostering greater ecumenical dialogue and exchange among religious communities, the university launched the Huffington Ecumenical Institute, LMU officials said.
The program brings the discussion to the forefront of academia and to local levels, particularly between the Roman Catholic and Orthodox communities, officials said.
Huffington Institute founder Michael Huffington and several Orthodox bishops and Catholic representatives are also scheduled to attend the ceremony at the LMU Sacred Heart Chapel.
