In high school boys basketball games:

The Venice High School Gondoliers were defeated 70-61 by Oxnard High School in a non-league game Tuesday, December 30th.

The loss came after the Gondoliers (3-7-1) had back-to-back defeats to Agoura and Burroughs high schools in the Santa Barbara Tournament.

Venice will kick off Western League play at 2:30 p.m. Monday, January 12th, against visiting Palisades High, which defeated the Gondoliers 55-43 in the San Fernando Valley Invitational Tournament in December.

The Santa Monica High School Vikings earned a convincing 67-41 victory over Saugus High School in the Chaminade Tournament Tuesday, December 30th. The Vikings had only one loss in the tournament to Granada Hills after victories over Chatsworth and Thousand Oaks in the earlier rounds.

Santa Monica (11-2), which held a 40-20 lead at halftime over Saugus, held the opponent to single digits in both the second and third quarters on the way to victory.

The Vikings will next host Palos Verdes Peninsula High School in a non-Ocean League game at 7:30 p.m. Friday, January 9th.

St. Bernard High School lost 56-53 to visiting Fairmont Prep of Anaheim in a non-league game Saturday, January 3rd.

The Vikings (9-7) have lost three consecutive games after going on a streak of five consecutive victories.

In their next non-Del Rey League game, the Vikings are scheduled to play against Morningside High Saturday, January 10th.

After racking up seven consecutive victories, the St. Monica High School Mariners were defeated 59-49 by Walnut High School in the Viewpoint Winter Classic tournament Saturday, January 3rd.

The Mariners (9-3) narrowly led 10-9 at the end of the first quarter, but Walnut scored 20 points in the second quarter to take a 29-22 advantage at halftime.

Ryan Featherston led St. Monica with 12 points, three assists and three steals in the game, while James Ward also scored 12 points. Ryan Capiro added eight points.

St. Monica will next host the California Academy of Math and Science of Carson in a non-league game at 7 p.m. Thursday, January 8th.

In high school girls basketball games:

The Westchester High School Comets lost 58-51 to Vista Murrieta High School in the Best of the West tournament Saturday, December 27th.

The Comets, who trailed 31-23 at halftime, outscored Vista Murrieta in the fourth quarter but it was not enough to overcome the deficit.

Westchester (5-10) will begin Western League play at University High School at 2:30 p.m. Monday, January 12th.

Venice High School was defeated 39-34 by Sanger High School in the West Coast Jamboree tournament Wednesday, December 31st.

The Gondoliers (4-5) trailed 25-11 at halftime after being held to just four points in the second quarter. They then outscored Sanger in both the third and fourth quarters but could not overtake the lead.

Venice will kick off Western League play against host Palisades High at 2:30 p.m. Monday, January 12th.
