In high school boys basketball games:
After opening Del Rey League play with a dominating win over Bosco Tech High School, the St. Bernard High School Vikings added another blowout victory, 75-34, over visiting Animo High School of Inglewood in a non-league game Saturday, January 5th.
The Vikings (10-9, 1-0) kicked off league play with a 67-23 win over Bosco Tech January 4th, and continued the momentum against Animo, taking a 33-12 lead at halftime on the way to the victory.
Devin Price led St. Bernard with 22 points against Animo.
The Vikings will next play at Bishop Amat High in a league game at 7:30 p.m. Friday, January 11th.
The St. Monica High School Mariners opened Camino Real League play with a 53-43 loss to host St. Paul High School Friday, January 4th.
After trailing St. Paul 12-6 at the end of the first quarter, the Mariners picked up 11 points in the second quarter to trail by just one at the half.
St. Monica tied the game by the end of the third quarter but St. Paul pulled away with 21 points in the final quarter to take the victory.
Jonathon Azer led the Mariners with 14 points and Patrick Russell added ten points and seven rebounds in the game.
The Mariners (11-5, 0-1) will next play visiting Mary Star of the Sea High School in a league game at 7:30 p.m. Friday, January 11th.
In its last game before Ocean League play began, the Santa Monica High School Vikings were defeated 68-49 by host Hart High School Thursday, January 3rd.
The Vikings (10-5) had won nine consecutive games before losing to Upland High in the Santa Barbara tournament, the game prior to the Hart loss.
Santa Monica, which trailed 33-19 against Hart at halftime, was outscored in each of the first three quarters, as Hart sailed to the victory.
The Vikings will next host Inglewood High School in a league game at 7 p.m. Friday, January 11th.
The Westchester High School Comets kicked off Western League play with a 90-62 victory over host Hamilton High School Monday, January 7th.
The Comets (15-2, 1-0), ranked second in the Southland by the Los Angeles Times, have begun their path to reclaim the league title from top-ranked Fairfax High.
Westchester will next play visiting University High School in a league game at 4 p.m. Monday, January 14th.
In high school girls basketball games:
The Santa Monica High School Vikings earned a dominating 73-41 victory over host Palos Verdes High School Friday, January 4th, in their last game before Ocean League play begins.
Santa Monica took control early with a commanding 21-2 lead at the end of the first quarter and held a 39-19 lead at halftime.
Daisy Feder led the Vikings with 23 points against Palos Verdes.
Santa Monica (12-3) will next play at host Inglewood High School at 6 p.m. Friday, January 11th.
After opening Camino Real League play with a victory over St. Bernard High, the St. Monica High School Mariners defeated visiting Marymount High School 42-26 in a non-league game Saturday, January 5th.
The Mariners held Marymount to just three points in the first half and cruised to the victory with 26 points in the second half.
Kaitlin Wilcox led St. Monica with 14 points and Cory Laguardia added 12 points in the game.
The Mariners (11-8, 1-0) will next play host St. Paul High School in a league game at 7 p.m. Thursday, January 10th.
The St. Bernard High School Vikings lost 44-34 to host St. Monica High School in the Camino Real League opener for both teams Thursday, January 3rd.
The Vikings held a narrow 8-6 lead at the end of the first quarter, but St. Monica racked up 19 points in the second quarter to take a 25-12 halftime lead.
St. Bernard will next play visiting La Salle High School in a league game Thursday, January 17th.
In their first Western League game of the season, the Westchester High School Comets picked up a dominating 48-19 victory over visiting Hamilton High School Monday, January 7th.
Seniors Andrea Ownes and Brittanny Stephenson led the Comets (5-11-1, 1-0) with eight points each in the game.
Westchester will next face host University High School in a league game at 4 p.m. Monday, January 14th.
The Venice High School Gondoliers were narrowly defeated 51-49 by visiting Fairfax High School in their Western League opener Monday, January 7th.
The Gondos (3-12, 0-1) will next host L.A. CES in a league game at 4 p.m. Friday, January 11th.
