In high school boys basketball games:

After going on a roll to start the season, the Westchester High School Comets were handed their first loss of the season in a 60-54 defeat to Winter Park High School of Florida in the quarterfinals of the City of Palms Tournament in Florida Saturday, December 20th.

The Comets (12-1) had won 12 consecutive games, including the Tip-Off Classic Championship on their home court, before the loss to Winter Park.

After trailing Winter Park by two points in the first quarter, Westchester scored 14 points in the second to take a 25-22 lead at halftime.

The Comets still held a narrow lead at the end of the third quarter, but Winter Park tallied 27 points in the final quarter to earn the upset victory.

Jordin Mayes led Westchester with 20 points in the game. Kareem Jamar also finished in double-digits with 11 points and Dwayne Polee added seven points.

The Comets will begin Western League play against visiting University High January 12th.

The Venice High School Gondoliers were defeated 54-47 by El Camino Real High School of Woodland Hills in the San Fernando Valley Invitational Tournament Friday, December 19th.

The Gondoliers (1-3) opened the tournament with a 69-55 win over Chaminade High.

In the game against El Camino Real, Venice scored 21 points in the first quarter to take the early lead and went into halftime narrowly ahead 30-29.

El Camino then kept Venice scoreless in the third quarter and held on for the victory.

The Gondoliers then lost 55-41 to Palisades High School in the San Fernando Valley Invitational Tournament Monday, December 22nd.

The St. Bernard High School Vikings won 83-78 over Artesia High School in the consolation final of the Cantwell Sacred Heart of Mary Cardinal Classic tournament Saturday, December 20th.

After losing the first two games of the tournament, the Vikings (7-4) picked up three consecutive victories on the way to the consolation final.

St. Bernard fell behind early in the first quarter and went into halftime trailing 42-35. But the Vikings then took over the lead by holding Artesia to 13 points in the third quarter and held on for the win.

Marcus Darrington led St. Bernard with 21 points and six rebounds. Randall Irvin finished with 17 points in the game and Emmanuel Alloh added 15 points and 12 rebounds.

Santa Monica High School defeated visiting Hart High School of Newhall 92-71 in a non-league game Wednesday, December 17th to earn its fifth consecutive victory.

The Vikings (8-1) racked up 28 points in the first quarter but trailed Hart 45-43 at halftime after being held to 15 points in the second quarter.

Santa Monica then took control in the second half by scoring over 20 points in the third and fourth quarters and holding Hart to just nine points in the final quarter.

The Vikings will next play Chatsworth High School in the Chaminade Christmas Classic at 1:30 p.m. Friday, December 26th.

In high school girls basketball games:

The Santa Monica High School Vikings grabbed a 45-30 victory over host Beverly Hills High School in the Beverly Hills Winter Classic tournament Saturday, December 20th, to earn their sixth consecutive victory.

The Vikings (10-2) held Beverly Hills to just two points in the first quarter and took a 21-14 lead into halftime, which they did not relinquish.

The St. Monica High School Mariners (6-3) picked up a dominating 69-32 victory over visiting Malibu High School in a non-league game Thursday, December 18th.
