The Santa Monica High School Vikings came out on top against rival Venice High School for the first time in seven years with a 28-0 shutout victory over the host Gondoliers in a non-league game Friday, September 26th.
The Gondoliers (0-4) had taken the edge over Santa Monica for six consecutive seasons, but the Vikings (3-0) continued their momentum from the first two victories of the season to finally dethrone Venice.
Both teams are playing with new quarterbacks this season after Santa Monica’s Ryan Katz and Richard Ragland of Venice graduated earlier this year.
The Vikings picked up their first touchdown in the first quarter and added two more touchdowns late in the second quarter to take a comfortable 21-0 lead into halftime.
Senior running back Cheyenne Jones led Santa Monica with two touchdowns on 185 yards rushing and running back Christian Ross finished with 112 yards rushing on 22 carries.
Santa Monica will next play at Jordan High School of Long Beach in a non-Ocean League game at 7 p.m. Friday, October 3rd. The Gondoliers will next face host Oaks Christian High School in a non-Western League game at 7:30 p.m. Friday, October 3rd.
The Westchester High School Comets were narrowly defeated 8-7 by visiting Washington High School in a non-Western League game Friday, September 26th.
The Comets (1-2) took an early 7-0 lead on a 20-yard touchdown run by Christopher Jacobs in the second quarter. Jacobs finished with six carries for 73 yards rushing in the game.
But Washington (2-1) picked up a touchdown late in the fourth quarter and added a two-point conversion to take the narrow win.
Comet quarterback Herman Evans finished nine-of-20 passing for 65 yards and running back Andre Buford added 71 yards rushing on 13 carries in the game.
Westchester will next face host Narbonne High in a non-league game at 7 p.m. Friday, October 3rd.
The St. Bernard High School Vikings earned their first victory of the season with a 34-21 win over visiting Brentwood High School in a non-league game Friday, September 26th.
Quarterback Malcolm Mitchell led the Vikings by completing ten-of-19 passes for 205 yards and two touchdowns, including a 17-yard pass to Jarrad Shaw.
Running back Ryan Richard finished with 100 yards rushing on 18 carries and wide receiver Daniel Pipkin caught three passes for 105 yards.
St. Bernard (1-2) will next face visiting El Segundo High in a non-league game at 7 p.m. Friday, October 3rd.
The St. Monica High School Mariners lost 37-7 to host Laguna Beach High School in a non-Santa Fe League game Friday, September 26th.
It was the third consecutive loss for the Mariners (0-3).
Laguna Beach, which held a 31-0 lead at halftime, added another touchdown in the fourth quarter before St. Monica scored its only touchdown on a ten-yard pass.
The Mariners will next face Chadwick High in a non-league game at Santa Monica College at 7 p.m. Friday, October 3rd.
